Early this afternoon, I called Donna to check on Jim. To my surprise, she asked if I wanted to talk with him …. Of Course!!!! Then this strong, youthful voice answered the phone. In an instant, my mind registered the same voice about 20-30 years ago. It sounded like the youthful, easy-going (ok, somewhat), Jim of long ago. I could barely carry an intelligent conversation I was smiling so broadly and was so very thrilled.

Continued Progress

Today is a better day. Last 2 days good with chest but horrible belly cramps and pain. Enema was not an option cause they do not want to take the chance of introducing any new bacteria into the body. But today things have swung the other direction… Jim feels really good if it were not for the bathroom issue. Said his body FEELS so different. What an amazing gift. Update

Update … Jim continues his recovery with his new heart continuing to work very well. A few curves in the road the last couple of days which are typical of issues following anesthesia, however these too will pass!

Amazing Progress

In the last 24 hours, Jim continues to amaze us with his healing. He had passed the echo cardiogram diagnostic, had his chest tube removed and is now being moved out of CVICU! All this in less than 50 hours after receiving the new heart.

And he’s up and walking! Looking at the video Donna just sent us, they may have to reign him in a bit – he’s moving quickly! Simply amazing progress.

Amazing Love

So awesome to witness the love between my mom and dad. He’s been very sleepy all morning. Mom got some much needed sleep herself this morning. She got back after noon. As soon as she walked in dad’s face lit up and started talking more. Such deep love they have after 40 years of marriage.

Good Day

It was a good today. A lot of good sleeping and sitting in the chair. Tonight starting the next steps, prednisone and some more anti-rejection drugs. In the morning he’s getting an electrocardiogram, as long as everything looks good there and insulin stays good. He’ll be moved out of cvicu to a floor room.

Doing Great …

Dad’s doing great this morning. They gave him some juice and broth this morning. First things in his belly since Sunday morning breakfast. His spirits are great. He’s been quick to give mom and I marching orders. Go figure. God is great.

Qualifying for the list …

In June of this year (2012), Jim Huffman underwent the evaluation at St. Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute, Kansas City, Missouri to become qualified for the heart transplant list. In early July, 2012, he qualified and became a candidate for heart transplant.
